However, it became clear that Vax was the target of the Vanguards' attack on the Ashari people all along. The table and the group chat erupted at the unexpected appearance of Liam O'Brien's Campaign 1 character. Vox Machina's Vax Returns to Save Keyleth The villain toppled the highest-powered ally in the room with a series of hits that forced her to drop out of earth elemental form, but the final blow was halted by her otherworldly protector and paramour, Vax'ildan, the Champion of the Matron of Ravens. However, through their connection to the Air Ashari, the Bells Hells fell right into Ludnius and Mercer's trap. Campaign 1's Keyleth of the Air Ashari, now a powerful druidic force known as The Voice of the Tempest, seemed to be the party's last hope at a Deus Vox Machina. With two of their strongest allies captured, another banished back to the Fey Realm and their skyship completely destroyed, the homestretch of Critical Role's anniversary episode was starting to reassemble Dimension 20's recently infamous Neverafter TPK encounter. When Mighty Nein members and player-proclaimed zaddies Caleb and Beau were captured by Vanguard and Cerberus Assembly leader Ludinus Da'Leth, the tides started to turn against the Bells Hells favor. Predathos, the only natural predator of the gods, served as a critical piece in the Ruby Vanguard's plan to destroy Exandria's entire pantheon. The plan was to stiffen enough of the villainous army's power so they could not free the ancient force known as Predathos from his prison on Exandria's second moon of Ruidus. This way, the series revisits the blood lust, adds nuance to it, and leaves fans nervous for their beloved heroes as opponents ramp up.An evening of subterfuge and fortunate dice rolls allowed the Bells Hells and their allies to wipe out a portion of the Ruby Vanguard's mechanisms. Ultimately, this subverts expectations from the Dungeons & Dragons lore and maintains the element of surprise. With an orb linked to the Whispered One's world currently limiting the use of magic across the realm, Pike and company might not be able to enact quick revivals, which would improve the show. Having people making mistakes and the crew being dragged down the wrong path now allows Season 2 to let death unfold without Hail Mary resurrections. The timing would be awful, especially with new dragons ( the Chroma Conclave) set to go on a killing spree, giving Vox Machina serious threats. The team has vulnerabilities, which could paint them as rash in the field. Given Grog's fondness for killing, he could also be corrupted the same way, with either Orthax or the Whispered One taking hold. Plus, Season 1 did end with Grog picking up Sylas' sword, which has dark magic in it. This means the demon is out there to possess others so that it can sneak back into Percy's mind, possibly having him repeat these errors without knowing. To end Season 1, Percy destroyed his gun and seemingly exorcised Orthax, but there wasn't much of a lesson learned or a sense of redemption in him as the Briarwoods died and Cassandra got their estate back. Characters actually dying would have added resonance to Percy giving into the demon and almost allowing the Briarwoods to bring over the Whispered One. It diminishes the narrative of Percy breaking rules and putting the team in danger. Sadly, the way the show constantly faked out fans, making it seem like characters would die only to pull them back and have them fit as a fiddle feels like there'll always be a way out. In Keyleth's case, Vax used Keyleth's supernatural powders to resurrect her, the same way Keyleth did when villains sliced Cassandra's throat. There were just too many deus ex machinas, such as Pike using the Everlight magic to heal her allies. It happened when Grog went into an acid pool to help stop Delilah and Sylas, again when Scanlan was bitten by zombies, and once more when Keyleth was mortally wounded fighting the Briarwood fiends. It gave the impression these heroes were at risk, but sadly, the series didn't lean into this when things went off the rails. The series initially played up how high-stakes Exandria was, showing monsters killing soldiers.
